Swamp Eyes is the solo experimental folk project of Evansville-based singer/songwriter, Sam Kuban. At only seventeen months old, Sam's firstborn was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. His latest release, “Something’s in the Hall,” is a direct emotional response to navigating the intense fear surrounding this unforeseen diagnosis and its complications from a parental perspective. This chaotic folk experiment offers the listener a deep-dive into an awe-inspiring binary world of soothing finger-style guitar juxtaposed with spastic blasts of percussive chaos that somehow satisfyingly coexist.

Trash Palace 02:39
The widow in the mansion Is cursing our smile We walk quickly past But her stare burns for miles The widow in the mansion Is watching us bloom Her knuckles are white as she's gripping the broom She'll sweep old mess Into new piles 'til she's dead She wishes they ate us up Eating through different guts instead Tries spreading her ache Like a starved parasite But we're already rotten and graying And she'll find out when she bites
2.
Tie stones to my feet Push me over the boat Throw me into the river Just to see if I'll float Now I'm laying with the bones Wash the red from your hands In the blue of the tide Sink teeth in new skin Drag them out for a ride Someone always wants a ride I'm pruning up at the bottom I'll take some smokes if you got 'em We're pruning up at the bottom We'll take some smokes if you got 'em We wait for the lights to come find us And we're bait for whatever's behind us We wait too long or not long enough The waves too strong or not strong enough
3.
Dig A Hole 02:47
Dig a hole for the dreamer Stomp the Reaper's shovel down Dig a hole for the dreamer Hungry soul meets hungry ground As the lungs embrace the soil Once they tire from the toil Let his silent future bellow Through the town Dig a hole for the sinner Let the rainfall wash him in Dig a hole for the sinner Careless grave for careless skin As the lungs embrace the soil Once they tire from the toil Hear his silent future drowning out the sin Mother Earth will chew the gristle Of the good, the bad, the gone Through fallen trees the wind still whistles Darkness shudders at the dawn Every beauty starts in shadow Every flower from the seed Now they've started Digging holes for you and me When we make our final fall And hope our time they still recall The bones in the garden tell it all The bones in the garden tell it all
4.
They say there's a farm Past the fields up North Where the sick dogs go But there's a swarm Head to heel, back and forth Making way for the crow Old weapons are breaking From the weakness of weld Old secrets aren't hidden Just because they've been held
5.
Mess Maker 02:46
Mess Maker, Mess Maker Make me a mess Spit up that vomit All over your dress Mess Maker, Mess Maker Screw up the sheets Put glue in my hair And pour slop on the streets Mess Maker, Mess Maker Dump out the trash Then stomp all around In the soot and the ash Mess Maker, Mess Maker Smash me a cake Break all the bottles Pour grime in the lake Mess Maker, Mess Maker Who gives a care? Who cares if they hate us? Who cares if they stare? Mess Maker, Mess Maker We'll be just fine We'll joyfully roll Through the tar and the feather We'll happily stomp Through the mud and the heather Whatever we do We will do it together Because Mess Maker, Mess Maker Your mess is mine Yeah, Mess Maker, Mess Maker We'll be just fine Because Mess Maker, Mess Maker Your mess is mine.
6.
Scurry 03:19
Something's in the hall Between us and it all Trouble doesn't come when we want it to There’s panic in the breeze We scurry like the fleas We're trying not to die in the windowsill Bleeding through the fight Digging through the night Struggle to find it and cling to the light If there's a secret to keep From the herd, from the sheep From the man in the sky I won't blow it Your heaviest fears They can sit 'tween my ears And though mine are the same I won't show it They will try, they will pry With suspicion in eye But the root of the tree They won't grow it So trust that your worry Won't sit ‘fore the jury And all the bullshit We'll forgo it
7.
Eat Us 04:16
There's a roach in the leftovers We're still gonna eat them Bad habits are hungry now We still have to feed them Cracks getting wider Smoke billows higher Preventable fire We're gonna let it happen We're gonna let it happen We're gonna make it happen There's a shark in the shallow end Let him prey We're the roach in their leftovers They're gonna eat us anyway There’s a wolf in the hen house now Let him stay Empty pockets Sweat on the brow
8.
Cheers 01:50
There's a body in the river Floating quietly to town No more struggle, no more shiver Won't break calm, won't turn him around Slow Flow Swell On Cheers Friend Stay Gone Take your time, silent soldier Bathe in the breeze of nothing more The siren's search has long been over Let the water gently Pull you from the shore

about

"Take a Danny Elfman soundtrack, punk it up a bit, then throw it in a wood-chipper and out the other end you'll hear the experimental sound of Swamp Eyes, the Strange Folk project of Southern Indiana-based singer/songwriter, Sam Kuban. Combining dense vocal arrangements, haunting finger-style guitar, and spastic blasts of drums and bass, Sam’s first full-length Swamp Eyes album, “Something’s In The Hall,” is a direct emotional response to navigating the intense fear surrounding an unforeseen diagnosis from a parental perspective. Lyrically and musically, the record embodies the cyclical relationship of tragedy and acceptance, beauty and ugliness; all of which became well-known to Sam and his wife when their first-born child was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at just seventeen months old."
